Haley Schimmer, ND, owner and physician of Truckee-Tahoe Naturopathic Medicine, was born and raised in Tahoe City, California. From a young age, she has always been interested in the field of naturopathy. Schimmer left the Tahoe area to complete his degree, earning his undergraduate degree in exercise science in kinesiology.
After several years of working in the world of physiotherapy, Schimmer has always been passionate about the field of naturopathy and wanted to pursue it.
“Over the years, I worked in many different healthcare jobs, but I felt like I was always thinking about naturopathic medicine,” Schimmer said. “At some point I decided it was time to become a doctor, so I completed my prerequisites and went to medical school in Portland, Oregon at the National University of Medicine natural, and I graduated in 2022.”
Naturopathy is defined as the field of alternative medicine, based on the theory that diseases can be successfully treated or prevented without the use of medication, through proactive techniques such as diet, exercise and massage. .
After growing up locally and moving for her career, Schimmer has always felt drawn over the years to return to the Tahoe area and looks forward to being back and being a part of the community again.
“I have always wanted to return to the mountains and I am very excited to provide my services to this community,” Schimmer said. “There are a handful of naturopathic doctors practicing in the area, but I still felt there was a need in our community. »
Truckee-Tahoe Naturopathic Medicine offers a variety of services to help and prevent illnesses and problems, and Schimmer says he is able to help many patients with the health care they need.
“I consider myself holistic primary care,” Schimmer said. “I see everything that comes in the door. However, I specialize in digestive health, autoimmune diseases, and complex chronic illnesses.
Truckee-Tahoe Naturopathic Medicine focuses on 13 main areas: digestive health, fatigue, headaches, body/joint pain, inflammation, sleep disorders, skin conditions, mental health, heart health, pediatrics, chronic illnesses, autoimmune and men’s and women’s health. . Among these primary areas of focus, Schimmer’s practice also offers proactive labs and testing such as screening blood tests, hormone and adrenal testing, stool, digestive and urine testing, and food intolerance and allergy; and offers treatment modalities such as botanical medicine, homeopathy, gastrointestinal detoxification, and hydrotherapy.
Schimmer also specializes in offering niche wellness services such as craniosacral therapy, a hands-on technique that examines membranes and fluid movement in and around the central nervous system; as well as holistic pelvic floor therapy.
Since opening the doors to her practice earlier this summer, Schimmer is grateful to be a part of the North Lake Tahoe landscape again.
“It’s so wonderful to get to know community members, old and new,” Schimmer said. “Because I grew up here, you always run into familiar faces, but it’s so great to see everyone be a part of this community.” It’s also wonderful to have windows of time to be in the mountains and fully experience the Tahoe lifestyle by living here, doing things like hiking between dates or taking a morning dip in Lake Tahoe, It is very enriching.
Looking forward, Schimmer looks forward to growing Truckee-Tahoe naturopathic medicine and providing a unique, proactive approach that breaks the traditional healthcare mold.
“I’m accepting new patients and really trying to help change the need for more one-on-one, individualized health care in this area,” Schimmer said. “I feel like I offer a really special service by providing very comprehensive, individualized health care that can be hard to find.”
Along with individualized care, Schimmer also offers recurring, donation-based Community Medicine Talking Circles in Tahoe City that are open to anyone.
“In my practice, I strive to look at the underlying cause rather than simply treating the symptoms with medication or a quick fix,” Schimmer said.
