The NDIA is running online information sessions throughout November to help GPs adapt to changes to the early years approach.
This week’s In Practice also includes an opportunity to help shape children’s mental health planning and policy, a reminder to use member-exclusive clinical resources, as well as webinars on COPD, self- collection for cervical screening and antimicrobial stewardship.
NDIS Information Sessions: The Early Years Approach
Prior to July 1, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) early years approach supported children under the age of seven; however, it has since been expanded to now include under-nines.
To help GPs manage the age change, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is running online information sessions throughout November, specifically aimed at participants located in partner areas of early childhood.

Help shape children’s mental health planning and policy
Emerging Minds is leading another National Workforce Survey for Family, Parent, and Child Mental Healthfollowing the success of his inaugural survey in 2020-2021.
Those who participate will help inform strategies and policies to better meet the needs of health, social and community service workers across Australia and support better outcomes for infants, children and families.
Participants also have the chance to win one of three iPads, with the draw scheduled to take place next month.
The investigation ends on November 15.
Free COPD Webinar
Webinar: Wednesday November 15, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (AEDT)
CPD: 1 hour
No cost
Keeping lungs healthy is an integral part of future health and it is more important than ever to act as soon as possible. There are many other factors besides smoking that can contribute to COPD and can appear early in life and affect young people.
Furthermore, GOLD has identified precursor conditions that may provide new opportunities for early diagnosis and rapid treatment.
In 2023, World COPD Day (15 November) aims to highlight the importance of early lung health, early diagnosis and early interventions, through its theme “Breathing is Life – Act Earlier”.
GPs are encouraged to attend free webinarmoderated by Dr Kerry Hancock, RACGP Special Interest Chair of Respiratory Medicine, and presented in partnership with Boehringer, to help implement evidence-based assessment tools and treatment algorithms in clinical practice.

Use clinical resources from the RACGP Library
To obtain reliable information to share with patients or to facilitate discussions about treatment options, members can access some helpful resources in the library’s collection.
Resources include those of Murtagh Patient education documents, which are arranged alphabetically and can be filtered by format or subject in the left navigation pane. Alternatively, members can search for individual conditions via the Murtagh Collection search box to find printable sheets to give to patients.
DynaMed is another invaluable resource that members can use to inform their practice. Use the search box to find a condition you are interested in and select “condition” from the search results.
Scroll through the titles in the left navigation to find:
- patient information – resources from trusted organizations
- Patient decision aids – to facilitate discussion of treatment options with your patients.
Members who are not already logged in to the RACGP website will be prompted via the OpenAthens box to log in using their university username and password.
Patient resources are also provided in each of the conditions and interventions sections of the Manual of non-pharmacological interventions (HANDI).
Speculum Sabbatical – Supporting Self-Sampling for Cervical Screening
Webinar: Tuesday November 21, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (AEDT)
CPD: 1.5 hours per hour
No cost
Cervical screening can be uncomfortable for patients, leading to hesitancy and avoidance, but it is our most important tool as we work to eliminate cervical cancer in Australia.
By giving your speculum a sabbatical, GPs can provide a more patient-centered screening experience, eliminate discomfort and improve screening rates.
Presented in partnership with the Department of Health and Aged Care National Cervical Cancer Screening Program, This webinar will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to confidently guide eligible patients in self-collection for cervical screening.
While this training was previously presented in August, it has been extended by 30 minutes to answer more questions from interested GPs, meaning previous participants are welcome to join again to refresh their existing knowledge or further broaden their understanding.
Antimicrobial Stewardship in Primary Care
Webinar: Thursday November 9, 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (AEDT)
Having patients continually request antibiotics for viral illnesses can be exhausting, especially when antibiotics are in short supply.
This webinar, hosted in partnership with Kenvue, presents evidence-based approaches to managing antimicrobial stewardship and aims to provide GPs with resources to navigate patient discussions and understand common overprescribed conditions.
Learning Outcomes:
- Raise awareness of conditions for which antibiotics are overprescribed
- Helping GPs understand patient behavior that drives antibiotic seeking
- Present evidence-based approaches to reducing antibiotic use in primary care
Speakers:
- Dr Mina Bakhit, postdoctoral researcher
- Professor Tammy Hoffman, clinical epidemiologist who directs the Center for Evidence-Informed Health Decisions
