Thriving Stockwell Health Network has co-created a healthy eating and lifestyle guide to help people make better food choices.
Thriving for Life: A Guide to Healthy Eating and Living – a guide to nutrition, healthy recipes and lifestyle improvement, offering easy-to-digest information on trending health topics – was produced by the community, for the community with communities across Africa Stockwell’s Eastern and Middle Eastern healthcare professionals and dietitians.
Healthy Heart Center
Stockwell GP Dr Vikesh Sharma’s Healthy Heart Hub highlights the importance of empowering communities to tackle the high rate of heart attacks and strokes in minority ethnic groups:
“This guide is a testament to the unity of healthcare professionals and communities, working together to address health disparities and raise awareness in Stockwell and beyond.”
Patients considered high risk by GPs were invited to Dr Sharma’s weekly sessions for advice, demonstrations on tools such as blood pressure monitors and an overview of resources such as NHS Heart Age Calculatorlearning to manage health risks from the comfort of their own home.
Community contribution
Samira Hamadou discovered at the center that her heart age was 10 years higher than her age – but she learned to go back.
Now a food ambassador for Healthy Living Platform and leader of a women’s group in Thriving Stockwell’s Community Living Room program, Samira played a crucial role in contributing ideas to the book alongside community builders Marta Sordyl and Radia Ahmed. Rima Rouf-Choudhury, Thriving Stockwell’s social media and communications manager, wrote the book with input from Dr Sharma and senior community dietitian Jasmine Carbon from Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital.
Paul Gill, from project funder Novartis, said:
“Never in our wildest dreams would we have thought we would create not only a healthy recipe book, but also a health and wellness book to help people make the right choices.”
