The Healthy Weight program advances the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity by integrating excellence in clinical care, research, quality education and community advocacy.
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) brought together 48 in-house experts and advisors, from disciplines and divisions across the hospital, to develop a multidisciplinary, comprehensive and innovative program targeting pediatric obesity. The Healthy Weight program helps improve the health and quality of life of overweight children, ages 2 to 18, by working with families to make healthy lifestyle changes.
The multidisciplinary team evaluates weight-related medical issues and helps children manage their weight through a family approach personalized to each child and family.
The Healthy Weight Clinic has an on-site fitness center and teaching kitchen. These new facilities provide space for healthy cooking demonstrations, practicing new skills and individual and group physical activity sessions.
Saba Khan, MD, medical director of the Healthy Weight Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Dr Khan completed his medical degree at King’s College London School of Medicine. She completed her internship at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayday University Hospital (London, UK) and King’s College Hospital, London. She completed her residency and fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Khan’s research and clinical interests focus on the relationship between disparities, particularly food insecurity, and obesity. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the Obesity Society.
Karen A. Wohlheiter, Ph.D., pediatric psychologist for the Healthy Weight Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Wohlheiter works with children and families in CHOP’s Healthy Weight program. She completed her doctorate in psychology at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County. Dr. Wohlheiter completed a predoctoral and postdoctoral internship in pediatric psychology at AI DuPont Children’s Hospital of Delaware. She has specialized training in pediatric psychology and working with children with chronic illnesses. This includes training in group lifestyle programs, motivational interviewing with adolescents, and working with children with developmental disabilities. Dr. Wohlheiter has published research in peer-reviewed journals and lectured at society meetings throughout the United States.
Elizabeth Coover, RD, LDN, registered dietitian with the Healthy Weight Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
She works with children and families through CHOP’s Healthy Weight program. Elizabeth received her undergraduate degree in dietetics from the University of Delaware and completed a dietetic internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is board certified as a pediatric nutrition specialist. His clinical interests are nutrition and childhood obesity.
Sherry M. Chandler: MSW, LCSW, in the Healthy Weight Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
A social worker in the Healthy Weight Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Sherry received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Temple University. She also holds a master’s degree in theology, religion and pastoral ministry from LaSalle University and post-master’s certification in cognitive behavioral therapy from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her particular interests include advocacy and services for children at risk and/or chronically ill and their families,
Christine Giovinazzo: Physical activity specialist in the Healthy Weight program
Christine received her undergraduate degree from Ithaca College in New York. His clinical interest is the prevention and management of childhood obesity.
