In a recent conversation with the journalist Abigail Shrier on episode #2109 of the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) podcast, he got a glimpse of the challenges young people will face in 2024. In conversation with Shrier, who recounted the insights of a research scientist, Rogan reflected on the challenges facing young people today and his perspective on the situation as a father of 3 children.

Abigail Shrier discussed the changing behavior of today’s generation, noting a worrying trend of highly intelligent but anxious individuals who are reluctant to take risks or take on challenges. She declared, “They’re so different, and I told him, tell me why,” she said, “I see the smartest and most prepared kids and they’re afraid to conduct their own experiments, they tell me they’re preparing , that they work on their skills, they are not up to the task…”
She shared insights from a researcher friend who observed that even top students are increasingly worried and frequently report mental health issues, highlighting their struggles with self-confidence and self-doubt.
As such, Rogan added his perspective as a father by stating: “It’s weird because as a parent you want to listen to the kids and when they have some sort of anxiety and problem you want to talk to them and you want to talk about it…”
He stated, “And in addition to these tools, explain to them that there are things they are going to have to do in this life that are very difficult. But there is great reward in doing these very difficult things.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding parenting in a time marked by increased anxiety, Rogan remains committed to guiding his children toward resilience and self-confidence, recognizing the rewards inherent in overcoming adversity.

Rogan worries about technology’s impact on children’s lives

Rogan said he was concerned about the immense pressure children face when they become famous in the media eye at an early age. He emphasized, “I think becoming famous in front of the whole world is an insane amount of pressure to be a kid. And as you grow up, you’re faced with a world that’s not manageable when you’re…no one is designed like that.
And in another episode, no. 2082, with Dr Debra Soh, Rogan highlighted the dangers of social media for young children. He mentioned how children compare themselves to influencers, which leads to self-harm and dissatisfaction. Rogan confessed, “…it’s like we’re in a strange place that has never really been through human society before, as far as we know.”
