Although his music may have helped at one point to give us the means to getting over a breakup, sometimes the music is not enough, even for the singer. In a recent interview on the Bodybuilders podcast, Clarkson spoke about her Mental Health struggles after her divorce and the decision to take antidepressants.
“I looked at my therapist and I just couldn’t stop sobbing, and I was like, ‘Actually, I had to cancel a game the other day because I couldn’t stop crying .’ I can’t do this,” she said, according to People. “And it was one of those things where I really had to put my pride aside.”
According to Clarkson, her therapist suggested she take an antidepressant to ease her mental health issues amid her divorce from now-ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. The singer decided to try Lexapro, which is a common medication for the treatment of depression and anxiety, for about two months. “It was, honestly to God, the greatest decision ever made,” Clarkson said. “I wouldn’t have made it (without it).”
Lexapro belongs to the group of medicines called selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and increases serotonin, which is a hormone and neurotransmitter that influences mood and happiness levels. Lexapro, Zoloft, Prozac, Celexaand other antidepressants are usually prescribed by doctors alongside therapy for short- or long-term treatment of patients suffering from depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions. Clarkson says she wasn’t sure about the drug at first, but it ended up being an eye-opening experience. “It was a really good lesson like, ‘You have to put your ego and everything else aside,'” she said, according to Hello America. “When someone tries to help you, listen.”
For Clarkson, Lexapro helped her get to where she needed to be mentally and establish a more sustainable lifestyle after stopping the medication. “And then the moment you stop (the medication), it’s like… I handled what I couldn’t handle at the time and now I have time and space and I took the whole summer off,” she said. “It’s very personal. And I’ve always put out personal music – I think I’m that kind of writer in general, everyone knows that,” she said. TODAY. “I think when you have kids – you both have kids too – you kind of ask yourself, ‘What am I going to do here?’ So I was very selective about the songs I chose for the album.
