The status of Shreyas IyerFitness remains a subject of intrigue in cricketing circles. On Thursday, it was reported that Iyer’s back injury worsened during his stint with Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. But while some sources suggest he could potentially miss a few early games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the injury, the officials concerned vehemently denied any danger to his participation in the tournament.
“There is no reason to worry; he is fine and will travel to Kolkata for the pre-IPL camp in two days,” Mumbai team manager Bhushan Patil was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
The website mentions that the Kolkata Knight Riders – the franchise led by Iyer – have also said that Iyer is in good form. The player himself, however, has not yet confirmed his fitness.
Eyebrows were raised when Iyer was notably absent from the field during Vidarbha’s second innings on the fourth and fifth days of the Ranji Trophy final, which concluded on Thursday.
During his 95 runs in Mumbai’s second innings, Iyer slowed down considerably as he entered the 80s and required intervention from the physio twice.
According to Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) insiders, as reported by Cricbuzz, the analytics reports are inconclusive. The precise diagnosis is expected to be clarified upon receipt of communication from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru.
It is highly likely that Iyer had back problems which forced him to withdraw from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy quarter-final last month. However, the decision seriously hurt Iyer as he was left out of the BCCI’s annual central contract list. There was no explanation for Iyer’s exclusion, but it is believed that the batter was sacked for apparently prioritizing the IPL over domestic cricket.
