Dear requested guardianship of his son Elie Bleu Allman due to “serious mental health and substance abuse issues.”
According to documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained Wednesday by USA TODAY, the Grammy-winning singer claims that for these reasons her son is incapable of managing his financial assets.
“Elijah is entitled to regular distributions from a trust established by his father for his benefit, but given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues, Petitioner (Cher) is concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah without assets to support himself and putting Elijah’s life in danger,” the filing states.
Cher is seeking to be the sole conservator of her son’s estate and resources, and according to the filing, the “Moonstruck” actor “worked tirelessly” to get her son the help he needed.
A hearing for a temporary order is scheduled for January 5, 2024, while a hearing for a permanent order is currently scheduled for March 6, 2024.

Cher says Marieangela King doesn’t support her son Elijah’s recovery
According to court documents filed Wednesday, Cher alleges that her son’s ex-wife, Marieangela King, is not suited to the role of conservator because “their tumultuous relationship was marked by a cycle of substance abuse and health crises mental”.
The filing adds that King allegedly tried to get Cher’s son out of a treatment center. “(Cher) is informed and believes that Angela is not supportive of Elijah’s recovery and that Angela is actively working to prevent Elijah from becoming clean and sober or from receiving the mental health treatment he desperately needs,” according to the documents.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Cher and King for comment.
In the filings, Cher noted that Allman and King were in the middle of divorce proceedings. The documents assert that King cannot be appointed conservator unless the court determines it is in Allman’s best interest. Cher’s lawyers say this would “result in the immediate loss or dissipation of Elijah’s assets for self-destructive purposes.”
Elijah and King married in December 2013, and Cher’s son reportedly filed for divorce in 2021. In a declaration filed in December 2022 during the couple’s divorce, King claimed that she and Elijah were working toward reconciliation during their trip of 12 days in New York the previous month. .
Cher denies Marieangela King’s claims she kidnapped her son Elijah
In October, Cher dismissed speculation that she planned her son’s kidnapping, which stemmed from a claim King filed in a court filing last year.
“I am not currently aware of my husband’s well-being or whereabouts. I am very concerned and worried about him,” King claimed in the 2022 filing. “One of four men who took him told me they were hired by (Allman’s) mother.”
While refusing to go into details of the alleged kidnapping plot, she said People Magazine that the rumor was “not true”. She added that her son’s situation is one that millions of other Americans face as well.
“I’m a mother. It’s my job – one way or another, to try to help my children. You do everything for your children,” she said during the interview with october. “But it’s joy, even with sorrow – most of the time when you think of your children, you smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them.”
