Women Managing Swine is a new four-week workshop series offered in November by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and ISU Extension and Outreach Washington County, to women who work in the pork industry or want to learn more about pork production .
Sessions will be held at various locations throughout Washington County on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a light meal served at 5:30 p.m., beginning November 6 and continuing November 13, 20 and 27.
A new topic will be covered each week. Topics include an overview of swine production in Iowa, swine nutrition, health and safety around swine production, swine ventilation, maximizing the value of swine manure, building maintenance and renovation pigs and considerations for siting a new building. Sessions are designed to be interactive and hands-on.
“This program aims to provide a basic understanding of a wide range of topics related to swine production,” said Matt Romoser, ISU Extension and Outreach swine specialist. “In the ever-changing world of pork production, areas like nutrition, health and barn management remain constants for producers. “
There is a registration fee of $50, which includes the meal before each session as well as all materials and resources. Register online at https://go.iastate.edu/PJHXEL or by calling the Washington County office of ISU Extension and Outreach at 319-653-4811. The registration deadline is November 1 at 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required and places are limited to 25 participants.
“Regardless of their previous production experience, our goal is to equip participants with tools and information to help them succeed in the pork industry,” Romoser said.
