MALLAIG- The Mallaig Unity Center was full of people in support of mental health on November 4, as the Stand Up For Mental Health comedy show took place. The evening included a meal prepared by Mallaig firefighters, entertainment from local musicians, games, plenty of opportunities to bid on silent and live auctions, and of course some comedians.
The event was hosted through a grant from the Rural Mental Health Network and the Demeria Memorial Fund group. Several volunteers stepped up to help organize the event, according to Rae Michaud, one of the evening’s organizers.
“I can honestly say that we were overwhelmed by the support we received and the evening was a great success,” said Michaud.
“The musicians, David the comedian and the guests who worked with him for two months to prepare the materials for the show, and the vendors that took place, the interactive games, all played a role in creating a space positive place to talk and focus on. the topic of mental health,” she explained.
Working with the Mallaig Fire Brigade who prepared an impressive meal, the Mallaig Recreation Board served drinks including mocktails throughout the evening.
“There are a lot of people to thank,” Michaud said. She noted that the total number of people harvested has not yet been counted.
Organizers also asked participants to fill out surveys, which will be reviewed soon to see what to focus on in the future and what classes and resources people would like to see offered locally, according to Michaud.
The Demeria Memorial Fund was established in memory of Tony Demeria, Michaud’s brother.
“Tony Demeria was a father, brother and son who took his own life too soon,” reads information presented at the November 4 event. “We want to preserve his memory and provide local support to those who need it.”
