The seed – Heino Ferch draws attention to global nutrition with thriller
With a political thriller, the actor Heino Ferch wants to bring the topic of global nutrition closer to the public. The six-part ARD series “Die Saat” (Saturday, 8:15 p.m., Das Erste) revolves around the Global Seed Vault in Spitsbergen in Norway, a seed archive where seeds from around the world are stored as genetic backup.
“With my role, I want to bring this closer to the audience. Through Max’s eyes, this kaleidoscope of political, power and economic structures is revealed,” Ferch (60) told the German Press Agency. It’s about lobbying and how deals are made. “It’s on the agenda, but often we don’t notice it because it happens behind closed doors.”
A television series can entertain audiences while drawing attention to social issues. “It doesn’t have to be informative. It has to be entertaining and exciting. I think you can reach a wider audience with entertainment than with a documentary,” says Ferch.
A hot topic
The subject of world food is current for sad reasons, “because during the war in Ukraine, the Russian blockade of grain exports was used as a strategic weapon of war, which meant that the countries of Africa could not be supplied and that famine would ensue. He also revealed what the actor pays attention to when it comes to food and sustainability: “Now I am lucky enough to live in Upper Bavaria, where almost every village has a church, a cemetery, a bakery and an inn, and where the owner knows where the trout, game or pork comes from. Of course, it’s also a question of money if you want to eat well – in season and region, for example . “Many social problems are linked to the topic of nutrition; it shows that everything is connected to everything else.”
