Cottage cheese is making a comeback! Who would have thought?! ????
This retro kitchen is gaining popularity on Tic Tac And Instagram with people creating all kinds of recipes using cottage cheese. From cottage cheese ice cream to cottage cheese pasta, the internet is hoping to turn sour milk skeptics into cottage cheese fans. In fact, #cottagecheese has over 223 million views on TikTok! Of course it’s not the first time TikTok Recipes caught our attention – there was ice cream and fruit roll sweets, lazy enchiladasand of course, the now famous butter board. But when we saw cottage cheese start to take over social media, we started wondering: what is this trend? Really everything on?
In the past, people notoriously loved cottage cheese (including yours truly!) or hated it. Perhaps because of its lumpy, thick and yet soup-like texture. It also gets a bad rap for being used in fad diets in the ’80s, although its health benefits are just another reason to love cottage cheese (more on that later).
Nowadays, cottage cheese is inspired by Greek yogurt, which has become a staple in many homes and recipes. Once considered bland, it’s now an internet sensation: here’s why we think cottage cheese is worth a try!
Why is cottage cheese so popular?
Cottage cheese is essentially a curdled dairy product with a mild taste. According to California dairy products, “Cottage cheese is believed to be the first cheese made in America.” The process was imported from Europe and “by the mid-1800s, the term cottage cheese entered the American vocabulary.” But it wasn’t until after World War I that cottage cheese received its first real advertising campaign. Cottage cheese was favored during the war effort in place of meat and so consumption increased from there. However, after the 1980s, cottage cheese experienced some decline. In other words, until now!
One of the reasons cottage cheese is so popular is its health benefits. It is low in sugar and high in protein. (You just have to ask Ree Drummond on her health journey eat foods richer in protein!) But that’s not all, it is also extremely versatile in recipes that can be both sweet and savory. Think of it as a blank canvas for healthy breakfast ideasdinner recipes and low-fat desserts!
Still not sold? Erin Merhar, Digital Food Director, says, “Cottage cheese is filling, while still being a healthy choice for ‘cheese.’ My favorite way to eat it is straight from the container, on wheat crackers. It keeps me full until lunchtime!
How to use cottage cheese in recipes?
Here’s the fun part: cottage cheese can be used in so many ways! Simply dress it with a drizzle of good olive oil, freshly chopped cucumbers and tomatoes, and sprinkle with salt for a tasty snack (one of my personal favorites!). Or look for a very thick whole milk cottage cheese and spread it on toast with a drizzle of honey. It can also be used in smoothies Or baked pasta recipes.
“For those who don’t like the grainy texture of ricotta,” says Erin, “use large-curd cottage cheese in lasagna or baked ziti. It’s the perfect creamy, savory substitute.” This is a hack that The Pioneer Woman also uses. Discover his recipes for lasagna And cooking noodles with sour cream-both made with cottage cheese for added creaminess.
Most people take issue with the texture of cottage cheese, but nowadays people mix and whip cottage cheese to get a creamy sensation. That’s where the viral cottage cheese ice cream comes in. But there are also cottage cheese pancakes, whipped cottage cheese dip, cottage cheese vodka sauce and much more.
