History of National Nutrition Week
In 1975, the American Dietetic Association – now called the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – launched National Nutrition Week. This week aimed to raise awareness about the importance of eating well and staying active to lead a healthy life.
People really liked the idea, so in 1980 the celebration was extended to a whole month. In India, National Nutrition Week was first celebrated in 1982. The government has launched various initiatives to encourage, inform and teach people about healthy eating and its link to staying healthy and living Longer.
Importance of National Nutrition Week
National Nutrition Week is celebrated with the aim of educating individuals on the importance of adopting a healthy and nutritious diet. The Food and Nutrition Board, under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, orchestrates an annual week-long commemoration to raise awareness about this fundamental principle.
At the heart of this initiative is the emphasized importance of a healthy diet to support optimal human physiological function and growth. The imperative to maintain a well-balanced dietary intake, rich in essential nutrients, is unequivocally emphasized as a prerequisite for good health and developmental progression.
