Sex and relationships
Aussie fitness influencer Laura Henshaw raised eyebrows after admitting to a personal “hygiene failure”.
The Melbourne-based former model, who co-founded health and wellness empire Kic alongside Steph Claire Smith, was discussing how often women should wash their sex toys in an episode of the KICPOD podcast from couple earlier this week.
While the 30-year-old said she was cleaning up herself, she later admitted: “I’m being honest with you – I’m actually mortified to say this out loud, but I’m here for you guys.” I don’t wash it every time.
Share segment with show InstagramHenshaw asked if she was “alone” in her confession.
“Guys, why do you make me feel so comfortable that I can admit that these hygiene rules fail in a public forum like this and I die, but I also like being able to tell you this without judgment (sic)???” she captioned the clip.
“ALSO, AM I ALONE HERE?!” »
Sexual wellness brand Normal responded that Henshaw was “100% not alone.”
“But it’s a great topic to educate on because it can increase the risk of infections if not washed every time,” the company explained.
“Recommended practice: every time!” Keeps you and them in great condition.
Dozens of women revealed they wash theirs “every time” – while one jokingly asked if “using a baby wipe counts”.
Others wrote that it depended on whether the toy was used for external or internal stimulation.
According to Normalsex toys can “accumulate dust, bodily fluids, lube, dirt and invisible harmful bacteria” – hence the need to keep them clean.
“All of this can then be transferred back into our own bodies when we reuse them,” explains the brand.
“This can lead to bacterial infection like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or even STIs, which can be transmitted between partners who share the same sex toys but do not clean them before exchanging them.
Stainless steel or Pyrex toys can be cleaned by submerging them in boiling water for a few minutes, while most vibrators can be cleaned by wiping them with an antibacterial cleaning product and warm water, advises Normal. They must also be stored in a “dry and clean environment”.
“Be sure to dry your vibes with a clean towel before storing them, as wet toys can grow mold – and don’t leave them next to your stick of deodorant, fake tan bottle, or any other object carrying germs.”
