History of International Men’s Day
Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history professor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, first celebrated International Men’s Day in 1999 in honor of his father’s birthday. He urged everyone to use this day to discuss issues that particularly affect boys and men.
However, Thomas Oaster was the founder of International Men’s Day in 1992. It was conceived a year earlier. Due to its significance, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a professor of history at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, revived this day in 1999. In addition to commemorating his father’s birthday on November 19, 1989, Dr. Teelucksingh decided to celebrate International Men’s Day. the same day to commemorate the unification of the Trinidad and Tobago football team, which helped the nation qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Dr Teelucksingh argued that International Men’s Day should be a day dedicated to global issues affecting men and boys, rather than just a celebration of gender. Every year on November 19, this day falls on the same day as Movember, a fundraising campaign for men’s health in which men, or Mo Bros, grow beards and refrain from shaving .
