Every year, International Self Care Day is celebrated on July 24. The date has a specific month and date that looks like 7/24, which indicates that self-care should be done 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The day is dedicated to the importance of loving yourself and take care of our body and mind. This year’s theme is “Resilience, Adaptability and Thriving in Adversity” – a global call to action for people to build resilience, which can help individuals manage stress, cope with negative emotions and maintain their physical and mental health.
While it’s important to prioritize self-care every day, it’s helpful to start with a few self-care practices. Here’s a simple guide on how to celebrate International Self-Care Day this year.
Find time for yourself
Contrary to what wellness and beauty companies sell, self-care doesn’t need to be elaborate or fancy. It can be as simple as taking some time for yourself out of your busy schedule. Whether it’s just an hour a day, schedule free time in your calendar to do something you enjoy. This could mean watching your favorite web series, reading a book, taking a long walk and doing nothing at all. It doesn’t matter what you do, what matters is that you have it dedicated time for you.
Eat nutritious foods
As we said, self-care goes beyond bubble baths and face masks. Something as simple and effective as eating healthy is one of the most essential aspects of self-care. Eating a balanced diet that includes leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole grains not only improves your energy levels but also improves your overall health. At the same time, don’t deprive yourself of the foods that make you happy – like your favorite food or a guilty pleasure. However, do not overdo it and exercise moderation.
Daily exercise
Regular exercise not only helps increase fitness levels and build endurance, but it also helps reduce stress levels and improve Mental Health by producing “feel good” hormones such as dopamine and oxytocin. It’s also a great way to stay connected with family and friends, especially if you participate in group activities. But keep in mind that exercising doesn’t require having a perfect fitness routine or going to the gym: it could just mean doing your daily step count or indulging in physical activities such as yoga, swimming or dancing.
Have had your fill of sleep
We are all aware that adequate sleep is essential to maintaining good health, but most of us struggle to get enough. You should aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. This can be achieved by practicing sleep hygiene – healthy sleep habits that improve sleep.
Practice mindfulness
mindfulness, according to Buddhist scriptures, means clear understanding. Its definition matches its purpose: to help us see more clearly, respond more effectively to what life throws at us, and ultimately make wiser choices. It also helps improve concentration, manage stress, and promote positive thoughts and emotions. You can harness the power of mindfulness through breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or simply by connecting with your inner self every day.
