Many options are available to help or prevent gout attacks at home. Most are natural and have few or no side effects. But in some cases you will need medical help.

Try to take magnesium supplements, but read the instructions on the label carefully. Or eat foods rich in magnesium every day. This may reduce the risk of gout or its onset in the long term.
Ginger
Ginger is a culinary food and herb prescribed for inflammatory conditions. Its ability to help gout is well documented.
A study found that topical ginger reduced uric acid-related pain in gout. Another study showed that in subjects with high levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia), their serum uric acid levels were reduced by ginger. But the subjects were rats and the ginger was taken internally rather than topically.
Prepare a ginger compress or paste by boiling water with 1 tablespoon of grated fresh ginger. Dip a washcloth into the mixture. Once cooled, apply the washcloth to the area where you feel pain at least once a day for 15 to 30 minutes. Skin irritation is possible, so it is best to test on a small area of skin first.
Take ginger internally by boiling water and steeping 2 teaspoons of ginger root for 10 minutes. Enjoy 3 cups a day.
Interactions are possible. Inform your doctor before taking large amounts of ginger.
Warm water with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and turmeric
apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and turmeric are both frequently recommended anecdotally for gout. Together they make a pleasant drink and remedy.
No strong research support apple cider vinegar for goutHowever studies show this can support the kidneys. Otherwise, research is promising for the lemon juice and turmeric to lower uric acid.
Mix the juice of half a lemon squeezed into lukewarm water. Mix with 2 teaspoons turmeric and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Adjust to taste. Drink two to three times a day.
Celery or celery seeds
Celery is a food traditionally used to treat urinary problems. For gout, the extract and seeds of the vegetable have become popular home remedies.
Experimental use is well documented, even if scientific research is rare. It is believed that celery may reduce inflammation.
Adequate amounts of celery to treat gout are not documented. Try to eat celery several times a day, especially raw celery sticks, juice, extracts or seeds.

Nettle tea
Nettle (Urtica dioecious) is an herbal remedy for gout that can reduce inflammation and pain.
Traditional usage is frequently mentioned in studies. There is still no research directly proving that it works. A study showed that it protected the kidneys, but the subjects were male rabbits and the kidney damage was caused by administration of the antibiotic gentamicin.
To try this tea, prepare a cup of boiling water. Infuse 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried nettle per cup of water. Drink up to 3 cups per day.
Dandelion
Dandelion teas, extractsand supplements are used to improve liver and kidney health.
They can lower uric acid levels in people at risk of kidney damage, one study shows. 2013 study and one 2016 study, but they were rats. Dandelion has not been proven to help with gout.
You can use dandelion tea, extract, or supplement. Follow label directions carefully.
Milk thistle seeds
Milk thistle is an herb used for liver health.
A 2016 study suggested that it could reduce uric acid in conditions that can damage the kidneys, and another from 2013 the support. However, both studies involved rats.
Follow the dosage instructions on a milk thistle supplement carefully or discuss it with your doctor.
Hibiscus
Hibiscus is a garden flower, food, tea and traditional herbal remedy.
This may be a folk remedy used to treat gout. A study showed that hibiscus could reduce uric acid levels, although this study was done on rats.
To use a supplement, teaOr extract. Follow label directions carefully.
Cold or hot topical application
Applying cold or warm water to inflamed joints can also be effective.
Studies and opinions On this point, opinions are mixed. Soaking in cold water is most often recommended and considered the most effective. Ice packs can also work.
Soaking in hot water is generally only recommended when the inflammation is not as intense.
Alternating hot and cold applications may also be helpful.
Apples
Natural health sites may recommend apples as part of a gout diet. The claim: Apples contain malic acid, which reduces uric acid.
However, no studies support this hypothesis for gout. Apples also contain fructose, which can trigger hyperuricemia, leading to gout flares.
Eating an apple a day is good for overall health. This may be slightly beneficial for gout, but only if it does not add to excessive daily sugar consumption.
Bananas
Bananas are believed to be good for gout. They are rich in potassium, which helps the body’s tissues and organs function properly.
Bananas also contain sugars, including fructose, which can trigger gout. Many foods are higher in potassium and lower in sugar than bananas, such as dark leafy greens and avocados.
Eat a banana a day to benefit. No studies yet support the benefits of bananas against gout.
Epsom salts
