The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken a step forward to combat rising mental health issues among medical students in the country. The NMC has constituted a national task force to understand the factors leading to unfortunate suicides and recommend measures to improve the current situation.

Dr BM Suresh, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), heads the 15-member task force as chairman.
Described by its terms and references, the task force is charged with reviewing existing literature and data regarding mental health and suicide rates among medical students. Their goal is to analyze the factors contributing to these challenges and design evidence-based strategies to improve mental well-being and prevent suicides.
To get more in-depth information, the committee plans to visit colleges where suicides have been reported.
By May 31, 2024, the task force aims to produce a comprehensive report explaining its key findings and offering concrete recommendations to strengthen mental health support available to medical students. Regular progress updates will be provided to the anti-chic cell. The working group commits to convening regular meetings, virtually or in person, as necessary to fulfill its mandate.
