Skincare has become a trending topic thanks to apps like Tik Tok and influencers like CareByHyramwho review trending products and give their honest opinions.
As a hot topic, many people have found comfort during quarantine by focusing on self-care through skincare. Many use this time to test new products, establish skincare routines, and detox from previous products.
Miyoshi Anderson, a sophomore at Georgia State, has been experimenting with her skincare during the pandemic.
Anderson is a makeup artist and her skin serves as her canvas to showcase her art form, so she’s always looking to test new brands and products. But she admits the process is often a matter of trial and error.
“THE Milk the products are something new that I never tried until my 40s,” Anderson said. “During lockdown I tried using a different facial cleanser but it completely broke out my face. Overall, I try to keep my skincare very simple but effective.
Although Anderson is all about experimenting with products, other students, like sophomore Kaelyn Williams, have found comfort in their skin by adopting a more natural look.
She chose to embrace this new look by taking more time to focus on her skin.
“In fact, throughout quarantine, I found that I was wearing less makeup, rocking my natural skin more, and spending more time caring for my skin with weekly masks and exfoliation” , Williams said.
Embracing your skin and trying new things is part of an ever-evolving skincare journey. From high-end to drugstore, there are a wide variety of products to choose from. While price can be a key factor in developing a skincare routine, sophomore Nancy Genesis is a firm believer that “you get what you pay for.”
“Investing in your skincare is essential. It can be quite expensive, but once you learn about some of the ingredients and their functions, you’ll understand why. Honestly, it could be a fluke, but everyone’s skin is different,” she said.
Expensive products can have many benefits, but skincare enthusiasts have found their “holy grail” products at drugstore prices.
Anderson’s holy grail product is more affordable while still getting the job done.
“My Cetaphil facial cleanser is my holy grail product, and I don’t think I could have clear skin without it! It doesn’t dry out my skin, it doesn’t over-exfoliate, and it’s honestly perfect for my skin,” she said.
Williams, meanwhile, uses her holy grail product to target specific skincare needs.
“I think my secret/holy grail beauty product is lip scrubs. (It) gets rid of dead skin and hydrates the lips. So, I 10/10 recommend doing some lip scrubs,” Williams said.
Ultimately, skincare is about knowing your needs and finding the products that work best for them.
“All I can say is research, research, research, what your skin type is and what your needs are, and finding out what you put on your face,” Genesis said.
