Solution-based approach and partnership helping integrators assess and correct breeder, egg and chick quality issues
In recent years, the Productivity of broiler egg layers in the United States has faced several challenges, limiting the supply of quality chicks and taxing existing breeding stocks.
Dr. Duarte Neves, poultry nutritionist with Zinprojoins the Chat to discuss the hatch status and to review nutritional solutions to improve the performance of breeders and egg hatching.

Jackie Roembke, Editor-in-Chief, WATT Feed Brands/Flow Strategy: Hello everyone and welcome to Flow Strategy Cat. I’m your host, Jackie Roembke, editor-in-chief of WATT Feed and Flow Strategy review.
This edition of Flow Strategy The chat is brought to you by Zinpro. Zinpro Proven nutritional solutions help producers improve breeder and broiler productivity by improving hatch rate, bird productivity, chick robustness and egg quality for optimized performance and return on investment. Zinpro offers cutting-edge trace minerals designed to not only meet the nutritional needs of birds, but also to help them overcome production challenges associated with suboptimal nutrition. You can learn more about the comprehensive solutions available only from Zinpro has Zinpro.com
Today we chat with Dr. Duarte Neves, Poultry Research Nutritionist at Zinpro. He’s here to talk about the current hatching problem and offer insight into ways growers can solve it.
Hi Dr. Neves, how are you today?
Dr. Duarte Neves, poultry nutritionist, Zinpro: GOOD. How are you, Jackie?
Roembke: I’m doing well. Thank you so much. Thanks to be here. Well, let’s get straight to the point. Outbreak is a hot topic right now because it’s a fight on every level. What leads to this and what are some of the downstream impacts that a low hatch rate has on a farm?
Nevès: Excellent question. There is currently a strong demand for chicks in the markets; and there is a strong demand for all hens to lay more. Unless you placed younger hens last year to get more eggs this year, you will need more eggs from the older flocks. This will result in less than optimal quality of eggs in the market. This will cause more eggs to break and a greater increase in the bacterial load in those eggs.
With lower quality eggs on the market, fewer chicks will come out, and all the cost you invest in these flocks will be spread over fewer chicks. The cost per chick will increase. This is what we are seeing in the market.
Higher cost per chick, fewer chicks entering the field meaning less meat will be produced overall. That’s why it’s so important right now.
Roembke: Great, thanks for this idea. How is Zinpro address this problem to help the market overcome the challenge?
Nevès: The way we look at it is that we know that there are a multitude of factors that affect hatchability, other than just nutrition, management, flock health – all factors that can affect that, is not it ? The way we look at it is we approach the integrators in question, we look at it as sort of a total solution set, if you will, so we look at everything that’s going on and why what they’ve tried. What are the results of these solutions? We evaluate the quality of the eggs, and most importantly, quite frankly, we evaluate the quality of the flocks as they are young, as they are as they get older as well, that we focus a lot on the egg as a whole .
We enter and evaluate several different parameters. Using our Zinpro BlueBox (eggshell quality assessment tool) is one of them. We also bring in our experts. And we assess the whole situation. By partnering with the integrator, we can provide solutions that attempt to improve all of these issues they are seeing at once.
Roembke: What is Zinpro recommend specifically from a nutritional point of view to increase the performance of breeders?
Nevès: Based on the challenges we discussed, ultimately Zinpro recommends a product containing zinc, manganese and copper in the form of ZMC Availability. Through extensive research, we have proven that Availa ZMC is able to improve breeder performance and hatchability of laid eggs and fertile eggs, hence more chicks with the same quantity of eggs. We have improved the quality of these chicks, notably by reducing mortality over seven days.
Overall, this is a solution that we are working to implement with the integrators with whom we work in partnership. To learn more about this, please connect with me or one of our experts.
Roembke: Alright. Thank you very much for these ideas. If you would like more information about Zinpro and its solutions, please visit www.zinpro.com/species/poultry/breeders. Thanks again, Dr. Neves. And thank you for listening.
Nevès: THANKS.
