Sports Experts: Weight Management Strategies – Making Small Changes Simple
In a culture obsessed with weight loss and weight management, we often make the subject more complicated than necessary. But how can we achieve and maintain long-term, sustainable changes in our lifestyle and habits?
In this episode of the Sports Experts podcast, host Martin Foster sits with Dr Claire Madigan to discuss weight loss medications, the importance of dietary behavior changes, and considering individual variables in the weight loss and management process.
Dr Claire Madigan is currently studying primary care practices and supporting individuals’ weight management and loss before undergoing surgery. She completed an undergraduate degree in sports studies, then a master’s degree in nutrition, physical activity and public health, then a doctorate in behavioral weight management interventions in primary care.
Dr. Madigan is also part of the Center for Lifestyle and Behavioral Medicine (CLiMB).
The cultural effects of government inaction are discussed with respect to public education regarding nutrition and weight management, particularly among the younger population. Pharmaceutical remedies for obesity are considered, as well as the benefits of gold standard exercise and calorie deficit methods to accompany medical intervention.
The success of group social support in maintaining weight loss becomes evident, as do the positive effects of personal responsibility throughout the process. Discussions around the implementation of weight management and fitness apps are informed by issues related to maintaining weight loss and whether this is feasible in the long term.
