The central theme of the hybrid “Health and Nutrition” seminar is how the poultry industry can achieve a healthier flock by ensuring that each bird maintains a healthy, balanced gut and that each receives all the necessary nutrients they need.

A veterinarian’s perspective
Maarten De Gussem, DVM, global poultry consultant at Vetworks and also with Ghent University in Belgium, introduced the theme. His presentation is titled “A Veterinarian’s Perspective on Gut Health and Antibiotic Reduction.”
Gut health and the role of short-chain fatty acids
On behalf of the animal nutrition company Perstorp, Dr. Antonia Tacconi addressed the topic of intestinal health and the role of short-chain fatty acids. As the company’s global product manager for gut health, she discussed butyric and valeric acids and their effects on animal performance.
Bacteriophages and their role in antibiotic reduction
Proteon Pharmaceuticals is well known for phage development. On behalf of this Polish company, Professor Jarosław Dastych, CEO and founder of the company, gave an overview of bacteriophages and how they can play a role in reducing antibiotics.
The role of raw materials and bacteria
Laura Hoving is Head of Poultry Technical Services EMEA at animal nutrition company Chr Hansen. She explained how raw materials can ruin profitability and gave examples of how good bacteria can help producers stay profitable in the long term.
